GLAZE: What is it and What Does it do?

Time: 10:00am to 2:00pm
Cost: $30.00 LPG members/ $40.00 non members
Added Material Costs- $3 payable to the instructor.
*Sign up at the LPG after March 4

This will be a lecture style workshop looking into the black box of glazing. Anyone interested in making their own glazes, or better understanding the glazes they use are invited to participate. Having some experience mixing or developing glazes is an asset but not a requirement. Interest in glazes is the only requirement!

Over the course of the day we will work through the history of glaze development, what happens in the kiln, terminology of glazing, how to read and work with glaze formulas and recipes, safety, the potters periodic table, deciphering function and effect of the main glaze chemicals, deciphering the coloring oxides and stains in terms of uses and limits, and most importantly, where to find this information and how to use it.

The information will be given in broad terms which can and will be applied to all types/cones of firing from Raku through high temperature, and oxidation through neutral to reduction. The bulk of the examples will be applied to cone 6 oxidation as that is where most of us do our firing. There will be ample time for questions and discussion. Don't worry there will be plenty of handouts but you should bring paper and pen for your own notes.

You are invited to bring a sample of your favourite or least favourite glaze for group discussion while enjoying your paper bag lunch.

This workshop was a hit with participants last December, even in a snowstorm!

A participatory workshop in which you will make your own photo silkscreen (included in workshop fee) and use it to screen images directly onto clay and/or make slip transfer prints with which to decorate
your vessels. Discussion will centre around the use of decorative elements in either symmetrical or asymmetrical compositions and how that might work on your vessel forms. Chris will contact participants prior to workshop to discuss screen print images.

It is recommended that each participant bring several barely leather hard pieces to explore and play with.
Note that for this workshop there is a materials fee of $25.-/ participant for the screen, squeegee, transparency, etc. that participants will be able to keep and re-use.
