Fall 2010 Classes

The London Potters Guild offers classes for adults, teens, and children. Share the excitement of learning pottery in a state-of-the-art facility with experienced instructors, eager to work with participants at all levels of experience. Fall classes will begin in September and run for eight weeks.

Classes for General Pottery and Wheel Concentration are organized by levels, indicated by the Roman numeral that follows the class name:
Level I is for people with no or little experience with clay.
Lever II is for people who have completed a beginners pottery class (General Pottery I or equivalent) and are familair with the four main building techniques.
Level III is for intermediate or advanced potters.

Calendar for Year

The London Potters Guild runs 4 sessions of classes during the year. Registration for each session begins one month before start time. Fall Session: Mid September - Winter Session: January - Spring Session: April - Summer Session: May

Childrens and Teen Classes: The classes are designed to be appropriate for the ages listed.

Location
All classes are held at the new London Clay Art Centre, 664 Dundas Street, London, Ontario, which is on the Dundas bus line. Parking is at the rear of the building. 

 

Online Registration

We are pleased to offer online registration through the security of Paypal. Use your Visa or Mastercard to securely register for classes online. (more about security from Paypal) Here is how it works:

  1. Review the classes below, and choose the class or classes you would like to take. Click the Register Now! button to choose a class. (You can remove it later if you change your mind or make a mistake.)
  2. When are ready to pay for your classes, click the View Cart button.
  3. You will be directed to Paypal's secure website, where you can set up a Paypal account in a few easy steps. You will enter your Visa or Mastercard number and expiration date.
  4. Paypal will notify the London Potters Guild of your registration, and your payment will be sent to the Guild too

If you have any trouble with online registration, contact the web administrator.

Snail Mail Registration

If you prefer to register by mail, send the class name, dates and time, along with your name and phone number, with a cheque written out to “The London Potters Guild” to:

Cheques may be post dated to the starting date of the course. Registration is completed once payment has been made. Students will be accepted on a first-come first-pay basis.

All fees include a $25 materials fee
Note: Adults are encouraged to purchase their own tool kit at $15, tax included.

Refund Policy
To withdraw from a course, you must notify the Program Administrator at least two weeks before the course start date for a complete refund.  Within two weeks of the class start date (and before the course has started), 50% of the fee will be refunded.

There will be maximum 10 students in a class.  Should there be less than 6 students registered, the class will be cancelled, registrants notified, and money refunded.

General Pottery I
Monday Evening: 7 -10pm
Instructor: Brian Barry

This is a comprehensive introduction to working in clay. Participants will learn basic hand building techniques such as pinching, coiling, soft slab building, hard slab building and press moulding. Students will also be able to try their hand at the potter’s wheel, and will learn the basics of using this tool to create their own pieces. Students will glaze their work and end with a collection of their own finished pieces. Previous students of a beginner class may wish to hone and develop their skills.
(Eight Weeks: Sept. 20 to Nov. 8)

Tuesday Morning: 9 - 12 noon
Instructor: René Wortel

This class is for everyone—from the beginner to the advanced potter. Learn to make pottery with simple shapes and forms; develop techniques to simplify slab construction. Enjoy building tall, elegant and sometimes elaborate pots that will amaze you! Through the use of templates, you will learn to plan and create each piece. The final touch will be in the decoration and glazing.

Tuesday Evenings, 7-10pm
Instructor: David Moynihan

This class will concentrate solely on throwing on the potter’s wheel. It is a great course for those with a little clay experience who want to focus on wheel throwing, or for students who want to continue to improve their throwing skills. Students will also learn about the finishing techniques of trimming, handle making and embellishment, glazing and kiln firing.

Instructor: Beth Turnbull Morrish

This class will concentrate solely on throwing on the potter’s wheel. Instructor: Kyle Thomson

This is a masters class for advanced potters who have a serious intent about their craft. Course includes slide presentations, demos and assignments. Learn to talk about and evaluate individual pieces of pottery.

Thursday Afternoong: 1 - 4pm
Instructor: Gene Timpany

This class is for anyone who has completed a basic beginner class or equivalent to Gereral Pottery I. In this course, we will concentrate on how to make larger forms and the finishing details needed to achieve a professional and balanced look. Practice makes perfect so there will be lots of hands on wheel time.

Clay for Couples
Friday Evenings, 7-10pm
Instructor: Kyle Thomson

Do some serious bonding with this clay class for couples — i.e. two people who are either friends, married, or adult family members. Enjoy the shared pleasure of working with clay. This class is geared to both raw beginners and those who have had some past experience in clay. Expect to finish the course with a number of family heirlooms!
(Eight Weeks: Sept. 24 to Nov. 12)

Kids in Clay
Tuesday Afternoon, 4 - 6pm
Instructor: Sandy Harquail

(For ages 6-11 years)
Cost: $100 (includes $25 materials fee)

Children will learn hand building techniques including pinch pots, slab building and coil building with a focus on quality rather then quantity. We will also try the potters wheel! Pieces will be finished with slips and/or glazes, then fired. Participants will come back later to pick up their finished and completely functional wares! Expect to bring home lots of treasures!
(Eight Weeks: Sept. 21 to Nov. 9)

Kids in Clay
Saturday Morning, 9:30 - 12 noon
Instructor: Sandy Harquail

(For ages 6-11 years)
Cost: $120 (includes $25 materials fee)

This class will be fun for students with any level of experience and we will focus on quality rather then quantity. All pieces will be finished with slips and/or glazes, then fired. Participants will come back later to pick up their finished and completely functional wares!

Saturday Afternoon, 1 - 3:30pm
Instructor: Penni Stoddart

Cost: $225 (includes $25 materials fee) Price is for one adult and one child, with minimum child’s age of 6 years
Cost: $250 (includes #35 materials fee) Price is for one adult and two children, with minimum child’s age of 6 years

No matter your level of experience, this class will be fun for both parent and child. This is not a “parent help your child create something” class. Rather, it is a time to work and be together, each learning how to create in clay, making your own piece in each class. We will make creations using hand building techniques including pinch pots, slab building and coil building. We will also try the potters wheel! Pieces will be finished with slips and/or glazes and then fired and picked up at a later date. Expect to bring home lots of treasures - times two!!
