Classes - Winter 2008-2009

The London Potters Guild is pleased to offer a selection of Beginner, Beyond Beginner, Intermediate and Children's classes this Winter. Our classes are in high demand and almost always fill to capacity. Register now to avoid disappointment. A cheque, which may be post-dated, must be received in order to hold a place for the registrant.

All classes will start the week of January 19 and run for 8 weeks. Exception is the Jewelry class which will start on January 19 and run for 4 weeks. All classes are held at the East Lions Artisan's Centre, 1731 Churchill Avenue in London (map).

Fees include pugged clay, firing and glazing cost.

CHILDREN'S CLASSES

Children's Clay
Instructor: Penni Stoddart
Saturdays, 9:30 am to 12 noon
Ages 7 to 10
This is an 8 week course where your child will learn what clay can and can't do.  We have fun trying all sorts of hand building techniques, finishing techniques and we even get on the potters wheel! Be prepared to bring home lots of treasures! Children should come to class in play clothes that can get messy.

Saturday Afternoons in Clay: Teens Ages 11 - 17
Instructor: Beth Turnbull Morrish 
Saturdays, 1:00 - 3:30 pm
This course is fun for all levels of experience. We’ll try various handbuilding techniques such pinching, coiling and slabwork, as well as throwing on the potters wheel. Students will glaze their work and learn about kiln firing.   Everything will be fired in our kilns and you will pick up all the completed pieces after the end of the course.  You can expect to take home at least 8-15 finished, fully functional pieces!

Parent and Child Class
Instructor: Penni Stoddart
Sundays, 6 to 8 pm
Ages 7 to 10
This class is for the parent who wants to learn pottery and spend some quality time with their child(ren). We ask that each parent sign up with no more then 2 children maximum so that the class remains a true parent/child class. Children should be at least 5 years old (we don't mind how old the parent is!). Each student will be creating their own work parents are not expected to be assisting their child with every project.

This is an 8 week course where you will learn what clay can and can't do. We have fun trying all sorts of hand building techniques, finishing techniques and we even get on the potters wheel! Be prepared to get messy and you will bring home lots of finished projects!

EVENINGS

Beginners and Beyond
Instructor: Brian Barry
Monday, 6:30 to 9:30 pm
For beginners and those who need a refresher in the basics. Students will learn the basic principles of working with clay, using various handbuilding techniques and an introduction to throwing on the potters wheel. Students will glaze their work and learn about kiln firing. Participants can expect to take home 6 - 10 finished pieces.

Beginners and Beyond
Instructor: David Moynihan
Tuesday, 7 to 10 pm
For beginners and those who need a refresher in the basics. Throwing 101
Instructor: Beth Turnbull Morrish
Wednesdays 6:30 to 9:30 pm
This class will concentrate solely on throwing on the potters wheel. It is a great course for those with a little clay experience and who want to focus on wheel throwing and for students who want to continue to improve their throwing skills. We will practice making the basic pottery forms, such as cylinders (mugs), bowls and plates. Students will learn more about the finishing techniques of trimming, slip decorating, glazing and kiln firing. You can expect to leave with 8-15 finished, fully functional pieces. 

AESTHETICS VS FUNCTION
Instructor: Chris Snedden
Thursday, 7 to 10 pm
In this course students will explore both functional and aesthetic possibilities within the various forms involved in making lid systems and sets   That is:. Functional considerations involved in these forms will be explored or if the student chooses they can throw those out the window and make a sculptural set based on those forms.

DAYTIME CLASSES

BEGINNERS AND BEYOND
Instructor: Sam Cuttell
Tuesday 12 to 3 pm
If you have never touched clay before; or even if you have taken a class or 2 and want to sharpen your skills on the wheel, this is the class for you!  In this class we will cover cylinders and plates on the potters' wheel.  If you are "beyond beginner", I am open to what you want to learn.  Bring your idea(s), pictures etc. to the 1st class.   

Bring a large towel, trim your fingernails, tie your hair back; and don't forget your sense of humour! Max. class size 8.

JEWELLERY MAKING
Instructor: Joey Ianni
Tuesdays, 1-4pm
4 sessions
FEE: $85.00 members, $95.00 non members
Have fun making your own one of a kind jewellery.  With the use of clay, a variety of glazes and accessories you will be able to complete a piece of jewellery (pendant and ear rings) that you can be proud of.

HANDBUILDING
Instructor: Rene Wortel
Wednesday 11:30 to 3:30 pm

This class is for everyone; from the Beginner to the Advanced potter. Enjoy building tall, elegant and elaborate pots that will amaze you! Learn to make pottery with simple shapes and forms; develop techniques to simplify slab construction. We will use sketches and templates to plan and create each pot. The final touch will be in the decoration and finishing of the pots.
